Mark stopped at a gas station at the intersection of Highways 88 and 194. He got gas for the truck. The other four went inside and got them a drink and some snacks for the trip home. Jim, Sydney and Julie were the first three back in the truck. Sydney gave Jim back his iPod. She said she had a radio app on her phone and would listen to it. Jim said he would download the radio app to his cell phone when he got home. Jim wanted to turn off his cell phone and sleep all the way back to Charlotte. But before he could turn it off, he got a call. It was from Alex. She said she was trying to call Sydney, but she was on the phone with another one of her friends. Alex said, “Jim, I saw Scout’s Facebook page. What’s up with that?”
“Alex, it’s not good, I’m afraid. We decided to take a side trip to Lansing, only to find that big sign.”
“You mean about that new housing development they’re about to build?”
“Yes. I’m just as upset about it as you are.”
“Jim, I am way past upset. As soon as I saw Scout’s Facebook page, I called just about everyone in the neighborhood. You should have seen Vince and Marissa’s reaction. Marissa lifted herself out of her wheelchair and hugged Vince so tight, he couldn’t breathe. Simon and Ariel couldn’t contain their anger. Russell was so upset he puked his guts out. It took Crystal, Tia, Amina and Cassie to console him. Jodi got in her car and drove out of the neighborhood very fast.”
“Good Lord in Heaven!” Jim exclaimed.
“Jim, you haven’t heard the worst part. It made today sound worse than 9-11.”
“Alex, what is it? And I don’t know if there’s anything that could sound worse than that day.”
“Jim, as soon as April Lynn got the news, she bought three big bottles of wine. When she got home, she drank one whole bottle in less than fifteen minutes, the second in less than that, and I don’t know what she did with the third. She was so drunk she shouted all kinds of obscenity to everyone on Bethany Street. It took just about every last ounce of self-restraint I had in not punching her out.”
Jim asked, “Were my girls there when it happened?”
Alex answered, “No. Chelsea and Lauren hustled the younger ones into her car. I gave them the news as quickly as I could. Chelsea said she was driving them to Wendy’s house in Ballantyne.”
“At least I know they’re okay.”
“Kendra did likewise by taking some of the other kids in her van. Malachi rode with her, taking Audrey’s younger grandchildren with him. I don’t know where they went. Russell and Crystal and her kids just went on back to Pam’s house.”
Then, Julie tapped Jim on his arm and said, “Jim, I got Chelsea on the phone.”
Jim waved his hand at Julie, and she softly said to her, “Talk to her, Julie. I’m on the phone with Alex.”
Then Jim asked Alex, “How’s April Lynn now?”
“She’s okay. Natalie and Doctor Firestone had to sedate her. It took them, Megan, Kristyn and Christie to hold her down. When it was all over, April Lynn was quite exhausted.”
“I’m just glad it all ended okay.”
Jim told Alex about Melville’s stroke, Alzheimer’s and bladder cancer, and the fact that he did not have much time left. Then Alex said, “Jim, I’m going to go and make sure everyone is okay. But you all know this. We have a lot to talk about when you all get home.”
“Yes, Alex. We most certainly do. We’ll see you all when we get home.”
After he ended the phone call, Jim turned off his cell phone. He asked, “Julie, what did Chelsea have to say?”
Julie said, “She said she was trying to get a hold of you and so was Lauren. I told her you were on the phone with Alex. Chelsea just wanted to let you know she and her sisters were okay.”
“Alex said they were at Mom’s house.”
“Yes, Jim. Chelsea also told me April Lynn got drunk and went on a cussing fest. When we get back to Charlotte, I plan to have a word of prayer with her.”
Mark and Scout returned to the truck. Mark said, “The clerk asked me where we were headed. I told her Charlotte. She also said I should find another route because she heard something about a bad wreck in West Jefferson.”
Scout handed Mark a piece of paper. He said, “Mark, here’s that route that lady behind the counter said you should take.”
Mark drove the truck onto Highway 88. The route would take him into Tennessee, where he would pick up U.S. Highway 421. Jim said, “I turned off my cell phone. I’d like to try and sleep some on the way back to Charlotte.”
Sydney said, “Okay, Jim. But you may end up with a lot of messages.”
“That’s okay. Those messages can go to voicemail.”
Jim put the earbuds in his ears and turned on his iPod to play his jazz music playlist. As soon as Mark crossed into Tennessee, Jim fell asleep. There was a lot of conversation going on in the truck, but Jim didn’t hear any of it. Some of the music on the playlist was “new age soundscape” music. Those were the songs that kept Jim asleep. Maybe the sleep was what Jim needed after what he saw in Lansing.
About three hours later, Jim felt five fingers tapping on him. He slowly woke up to see Julie tapping on him. Julie said, “Jim, wake yourself up. We’re going to get a bite to eat.”
Jim sluggishly got out of the truck. He wondered where he was. He saw a Subway in front of him. He saw an interstate close by. Jim asked Julie, “Where are we at?”
Julie answered, “We’re in Hickory.”
Then it hit Jim. Interstate 40. Jim didn’t know that Mark drove through Boone, Blowing Rock and Lenoir by way of U.S. Highway 321. Jim said, “Boy, I really was asleep.”
Inside of Subway, Jim got him a small ham and cheese sub with mayonnaise and mustard and every vegetable except olives. He also got him a small bag of potato chips and a large iced tea. Outside, the rain started to let up. Jim did not turn his cell phone. He would wait until they were back on the road.
They got back in the truck. Mark drove to Statesville, and then headed south on Interstate 77 for Charlotte. By the time they reached Lake Norman, the rain had stopped, and the skies were beginning to clear up.
They had arrived at Bethany Street by late afternoon. Mark parked the camper trailer in the lot provided for trailers. The five thanked each other for a great fishing trip. Jim and Sydney got their stuff and headed for their house. When they got in the house, Jim prepared to put the fish in the freezer. Sydney went upstairs to use the bathroom and clean herself up some. Jim took some Ziploc bags out of the cabinet. He put some water in three bags, along with a little salt in each bag. Just as he was getting ready to take the fish out of the bucket, Sydney went downstairs and said, “Jim, if it’s okay with you, I’m going to go to Mom’s house for a little while.”
“Sure, Sydney. You sound like you want to spend some time with Autumn.”
“Yes, Jim. Along with Alex, Tim and his girls.”
“Okay, Sydney. I love you. Enjoy your time.”
Jim gave Sydney a kiss. On the way to the front door, Sydney said, “Jim, you have a visitor.”
Jim didn’t say a word. He just heard Sydney say, “Hi, Paulina.”
Then Jim heard Paulina say, “Hi, Sydney.”
Paulina walked into the kitchen. She saw Jim and said, “Hi, Jim. How was your fishing trip?”
Jim answered, “It went great right up until this morning.”
“You mean with what you all saw in Lansing, huh?”
“Yes. And it rained most of the morning.”
Paulina got a look at the fish Jim had in the bucket. She said, “It looks like you caught a good bit of fish.”
“Yes, I did. I cleaned them at the campsite. I am about to put them in the freezer to eat later.”
Paulina squatted down to look in the bucket. She was wearing a black blouse, a floral print skirt that did not quite touch her ankles, black pantyhose and black high heels. Jim said, “You look very pretty, Paulina.”
“Thank you, Jim. I haven’t changed from church this morning.”
Then Jim asked Paulina, “You want a can of Coke?”
Paulina answered, “Yes, Jim. I believe I will.”
Jim reached into the cooler and grabbed two cans of Coke, one for Paulina and the other for himself. Then he asked Paulina to sit down at the table. Paulina said, “Okay, Jim. Let’s have it. What’s going on in Lansing?”
“Paulina, it’s something like this. We decided to stop in Lansing on our way back to Charlotte. We wanted to see the old house. We were distressed to find a big sign saying that something called Bina Acres is about to be built there. The house is about to meet the bulldozer.”
Paulina said, “You are right, Jim. That is sickening news.”
Jim told Paulina about Melville’s stroke, Alzheimer’s and bladder cancer, and the fact that Melville did not have much time left. Then Jim said, “Susan and Bradley let us look around the place. I ended up with the fire pit. I’m going to put it in the back yard. There is an old storage building there we never knew about with some old service station stuff. Signs, oil cans, tire racks, even an old Coke machine.”
Paulina softly exclaimed, “Oh, wow!”
Then Jim said, “Yes, and we’re going to go up there and take advantage of all that. Bradley said we could have it all. But we’ve got to move quickly. The house could be coming down as soon as Easter Sunday from what we heard.”
“Sure, Jim. Any idea how we’re going to do all that?”
“Julie said she’s going to plan a trip to Lansing. I’m guessing we’re going to take the bus, along with the van and cargo trailer. We may even use Mark’s truck and flatbed trailer.”
“Okay, Jim. That sounds good.”
The two sat in silence for about a minute. Then, Jim could see that Paulina was trying to fight back tears. Jim reached across the table and put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. He said to her, “Paulina, it’s going to be okay. We’ll get through this.”
Paulina’s voice broke as she said, “Yes, Jim. Mom told me something a while back. Life can be full of disappointments.”
“Sad, but it is true.”
Then Paulina pounded her fist on the table and said, “Jim, you know, and I know, that house in Lansing holds a lot of special memories for us.”
“Yes, Paulina. That is true.”
“Yes, Jim. I remember this. When we were on that bus, do you remember Sydney and I sitting in the seat behind you two?”
Jim smiled and said, “Yes, Paulina. I most certainly do. I know you and Sydney are best friends and always have been.”
“Jim, I enjoyed this visit, but I must get home. Mom and I are going to finish packing for our trip to New York.”
“Sure, Paulina. When are you and Pam leaving for New York?”
“The end of this month. We will be here for you and Sydney’s wedding.”
Jim and Paulina both got up. Jim offered her another can of Coke. Paulina said, “No thanks. But this one was good.”
Jim and Paulina got up. Jim said, “Thanks for stopping by, Paulina.”
Jim walked Paulina to the door. She gave Jim a small peck on his cheek, and then she said, “Jim, I’ll be in touch with you.”
Jim watched Paulina walk to her station wagon, a little green Mercedes that was running like it was on its last legs. He watched as she drove toward East Morehead Street. After Jim went back inside, he went back to the kitchen. He made himself what would be an interesting meal, a can of Van Camp’s Beanee Weenees and a Hot Pocket. While they were cooking, Jim went into the living room and switched the stereo from smooth jazz to classic rock. Rod Stewart was singing “Tonight’s the Night.” He looked out the window. It was still light outside. In just a few minutes, his food was ready. He looked out the window as he ate. He remembered he had not turned on his cell phone since he left Lansing. I’ll bet I got a bunch of messages, Jim thought. He had messages, but not as many as he thought he would. All the messages, which were from some of his friends, had to do with Scout’s Facebook post concerning the house in Lansing.
Just as Jim finished eating, the phone rang. It was from Chelsea’s cell phone. Chelsea asked Jim, “Is it safe for me and my sisters to come home?”
“Yes, Chelsea. You all come home. I’ll tell you about it when you get here.”
Chelsea said, “Okay, Dad. We stopped for some burgers and fries and ice cream just a few minutes ago. We’re on Queens Road and about to get onto East Morehead. We’ll be home in just a few minutes.”
“Okay, honey. Please be careful coming home.”
About fifteen minutes later, Chelsea pulled into the driveway. Jim stood on the front porch to greet them. Valerie was the first one out of the back seat of Chelsea’s Camaro. In her usual fashion, she was wearing a T-shirt and jeans and a Firestone racing cap. Lindsay and Valerie were the only two not wearing a dress or a skirt. Lindsay was also in a T-shirt and jeans. As Caitlyn approached Jim, she said, “Dad, I made a new friend today at Nana Wendy’s house. Her name is Bella. We played some in the playground. Lindsay and Valerie were with us.”
“Caitlyn, that’s nice,” Jim said.
Lindsay stood beside Caitlyn. Lindsay said, “Yes, Dad. We played on the swings and the slides.”
“You all had a good time, huh?” Jim asked.
Caitlyn said, “Yes, Dad. We most certainly did. And guess what. Bella plays the guitar. She showed me how to play.”
Lindsay let out a little laugh. Then Jim said, “Another guitar player in my family. I guess I can accept that.”
Lindsay said, “Yes, Dad. And Caitlyn played it quite well.”
Lauren walked to where they were standing. She said, “I’m going inside. It’s starting to get a little cool out here.”
Jim said, “Good idea. Let’s go inside.”
When they got inside, Chelsea and Valerie were already in the kitchen. Chelsea asked, “Dad, how was your fishing trip?”
“It was pretty good. Caught a lot of fish.”
Then Lauren said, “I guess we’ll be eating some of it soon.”
Jim said, “Yes, we will. It’s in the freezer now.”
Lindsay said, “Dad, I’m just glad you all had a good time.”
Then, Lindsay took Valerie and Caitlyn upstairs and had them get their baths. Lindsay would get one herself. Chelsea and Lauren stayed behind. Chelsea said, “Dad, we know something’s up. What is it?”
“You mean with April Lynn getting drunk and behaving like that?”
“Yes. That,” Lauren answered.
Chelsea added, “Some of them had to stop Alex from punching April Lynn out.”
Jim said, “Okay. I suppose you girls remember that little house in Lansing.”
“You mean the one where we made that special promise you and your friends are always going on about?” Chelsea asked.
Jim said, “Yes. Anyway, we stopped there on our way back to Charlotte. We found out something rather disturbing. The house is about to be torn down, along with some others around it. They’re going to build a new housing development there.”
Chelsea and Lauren stood there, mouths open and dumbfounded. Chelsea said, “Oh, Dad. I can see why you all were so upset. I know that place holds some special memories for you and your friends.”
Then Lauren said, “Yes, Chelsea. And it should hold memories for you as well, along with me and your sisters.”
Jim said, “Well, it’s all coming down. Soon, we’ll be going up to the house and getting some stuff. It has to be cleared out in about a week.”
“Any idea when you’re going to go up there?” Chelsea asked.
Jim answered, “Julie’s going to let us know. And I’d like you and your sisters to come along with us. But for now, let’s just tell them we’re going to the mountains. We won’t tell them any more than that.”
Lauren said, “Okay, Dad. But can we wait until we get the word from Julie?”
Jim answered, “Sure. We can do that.”
And with that, Chelsea and Lauren went upstairs. Later that evening, Julie called Jim. She said she was planning the trip to Lansing for this weekend. She had arranged with Mark to use his truck and a flatbed trailer, along with the bus and the Chevy Van and the cargo trailer.
Sydney finally came home. Jim waited up for her. Just as Jim turned off the lights in the living room, Sydney said, “Jim, I need to ask you something.”
“Sure, Sydney. What is it?”
“Jim, it’s been a trying day and I need some comfort. Do you suppose…we could make love tonight?”
Jim thought about it for a moment. He didn’t really want to have sex with her until after the wedding. But, like Sydney said, it had been a trying day. Jim took her in his arms, and he said, “I suppose.”
That night in bed, Jim and Sydney had sex. They both admitted it felt good. The clock radio was playing new age jazz music from a Charlotte public radio station. The light from the full moon shined through the blinds and into the master bedroom. They kept going at it until they got warm and drowsy. They slept for the rest of the night.

The rest of the week went by without a lot of fanfare. That Tuesday saw Julie and some of the members of Salem Church break ground on the new church facility. Jim and Sydney were there. Construction on the building started on Wednesday. If all went well, the building would be completed in about a year.
On Thursday, Jim, Scout and April Lynn had lunch at a cafeteria on Park Road near April Lynn’s real estate office. Jim had eaten there before and always ordered the same thing each time. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes with brown gravy, salad with blue cheese dressing, a bread roll and iced tea. This time was no different.
There were two reasons why April Lynn and Scout wanted Jim to join them for lunch. April Lynn said, “Jim, I know you and Scout were not there when I got drunk and went on that tirade on Sunday. I apologized to everyone for that.”
Jim said, “It’s okay, April Lynn. And I know everyone forgave you. But I’m sure you could have handled that a little better.”
April Lynn said, “Yes, Jim. Sure, I drink a glass of wine here and there. That was the only time in my life I ever got drunk and I will try never to do that again.”
Then Scout had an announcement. “Jim, I met with your father this morning about that gas station building next to his used car lot.”
“How did that go?” Jim asked.
Scout said, “It went well. He’s going to let me have it.”
Jim said, “Scout, that’s great. When will you be moving in?”
Scout said, “I’m going to be closed tomorrow so that I can get the last of the stuff in the old gas station packed. Tomorrow afternoon, me and some guys are going to take the stuff to the new gas station. I hope to be in business sometime next week.”
April Lynn said, “Scout, that’s great news.”
Jim asked, “You two planning on going up to Lansing with us this weekend?”
Scout answered, “Yes, Jim. I feel I have to.”
April Lynn added, “Yes, Jim. I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself if I didn’t.”
Jim said, “I know. And it will be the last time we’ll be able to see the place.”

Later that afternoon, Sydney called Jim at the dealership. She was at Pam’s dress shop. She said, “Jim, I sure hope you are coming straight home after work this evening.”
Jim said, “Yes, Sydney. I intend to.”
“Good, Jim. Because I need you to see something I got for Easter. Not just for me, but for your girls as well.”
“Okay, Sydney. I’ll see you when I get home.”
“Jim, before you hang up, I need to ask you something. What should I fix for dinner this evening?”
“There’s some stuff to make tacos. You know how to make them, don’t you?”
“Sure, Jim. I made them for my family before. As soon as I get home, I’ll go ahead and get started.”
“Okay, Sydney. Get the girls to help.”
Jim went straight home from work, just as he planned. He called Sydney to let her know he was on his way home. When he got home, he saw all five girls in the kitchen, making tacos. Lauren said, “Dad, Sydney’s upstairs and she said she needs to see you.”
Jim walked upstairs as fast as he could. As soon as he reached the master bedroom, he could hear Sydney singing. Will the circle…be unbroken. As soon as he heard it, Jim knew Sydney was up to something.
Jim walked into the master bedroom to see Sydney wearing a lavender blouse with a big bow, a white skirt, tan pantyhose and white high heels. Sydney just stood there, smiling and gazing her eyes at Jim. He asked, “Is this what you wanted to see me about?”
“Yes, Jim. It is.”
Jim looked at her for a moment, and then he said, “You look pretty.”
“Thank you, Jim. Wait until you see what I got your girls. Chelsea helped me pick them out.”
Sydney pointed to the bed. The first thing Jim saw was a white jacket. Sydney said, “That’s mine. It goes with this suit.”
Sydney pointed to the clothes she got for the girls. Valerie and Caitlyn got dresses. Valerie got a blue one and Caitlyn got a pink one. Chelsea, Lauren and Lindsay each got suits. Jim said, “I know one thing. Come Easter Sunday, I will have the prettiest girls in this family.”
Sydney giggled, and then she hugged and kissed Jim. Then, he left Sydney to change clothes. A few minutes later at the dinner table, Jim told the girls to plan nothing for this weekend. He told them they would be going to Lansing with him and Sydney. They seemed to be okay with that.

Saturday morning came. It would turn out to be a very nice one. Jim and Sydney had the girls out of bed at six o’ clock. They had the girls put on some old clothes. They were ready in thirty minutes.
They met in the parking lot of Salem Church. Sure enough, Mark had a flatbed trailer hooked up to his Chevy truck. The small white cargo trailer was hooked to the gray and white Chevy Van. Vince and Marissa were there, and Nikki would be coming along. Nikki, Rebecca, Autumn and Wendy were the only mothers going on the trip. Rebecca’s daughters, Samantha and Kayla, would be coming along. Russell, Crystal, Scout and Paulina would be coming along, but Pam would stay behind and work at her dress shop. Jodi and Ariel were there, but Charmaine was not. Jodi said Charmaine had a bad cold. Renee and Alexis would be coming along and they would be taking turns driving the Chevy van. Kendra was at home taking care of Ambrosia, Kaci and Lucy. All five Marlowe kids would be going on the trip, as would Kurt and Hannah. Not only would the friends be on hand for the trip, so would the kids of those friends, except for the babies. The kids would be riding the bus.
Mark talked Jim and Sydney into riding in the truck with him. Julie would drive the bus. Renee would drive the van, with Alexis joining her.
After a prayer for a safe trip, they were on the road. Mark drove in between the bus and the van. They stopped for breakfast at a Cracker Barrel in Statesville. After that, they were on their way to Lansing. This time, April Lynn opted to ride in Mark’s truck. Sydney slept all the way to Lansing. They took Interstate 77 north out of Statesville. Mark had the radio on. Jim did not bring his iPod for this trip. Mark did find a radio station out of Winston-Salem playing music from the seventies and the eighties. Jim felt if that music was playing, he did not have any need for his iPod. Just as they entered Yadkin County, a big car carrier passed them. Two of the cars on it were classics. There was an orange Plymouth Barracuda with white racing stripes (Jim figured it to be a 1969 model), a red 1968 Corvette and a white and red 1955 DeSoto. Jim said, “Man, just look at that. Now there’s a sight that can brighten any one’s day.”
Mark said, “Jim, you know it.”
By the time they got onto U.S. Highway 421 headed toward Wilkesboro, the skies were beginning to become gray. Before long, it would rain some.
About an hour later, they arrived at the house. It took them about three hours to get everything out of the house and storage building. Susan and Bradley supervised the whole thing. Scout got all the gas station racks and signs. It took Jim, Scout and Simon about an hour to take down the old Firestone sign. The women and girls got the pots, pans, silverware and dishes. Wendy and Rebecca got the appliances. Those would be divided up amongst the families. They also got the flowerpots and garden tools. Paulina got the furniture, which she felt would be good for the apartment over Pam’s garage, which she would soon live in.
After all that was done, they spent about ten more minutes getting one last look at the place. After everyone thanked and hugged Susan and Bradley, they were on their way back to Charlotte.
Jim was quiet all the way to Charlotte, even when they stopped for lunch at a Wendy’s in Wilkesboro. Jim managed to eat a cheeseburger, fries and a large Coke, even though he did not have very much stomach for it. If that was not enough, Julie said it was quiet on the bus as well. She added, “The only voices I heard were the ones in my own head.”
Jim slept all the way to Charlotte as Mark drove. Sydney and April Lynn managed to stay awake. They managed to keep some conversation. Jim did not pay any attention to it.
As soon as they got home, everything except for the gas station stuff was unloaded. That stuff went to Scout’s new gas station building. Later that week, Scout’s old gas station was torn down…and so was that house in Lansing.
By the following week, all the sadness seemed to have subsided. It had to. Not only was Easter coming, so was Jim and Sydney’s wedding. Everyone knew one thing, and a song that had been sung in church time and time again seemed to have said it best. Time has made a change.

Last spring I made a post about Free Lutheran Bible College (Plymouth, MN) being the worst basketball team in the country. This past weekend, they had two games to open up their season, and I’m afraid to say that they may be worse than last year.
FLBC started off on Friday with an 85-5 loss to fellow NCCAA school Faith (Ankeny, IA). For the statheads, the Conquerors as a team had 39 turnovers and 11 total rebounds (1 offensive rebound). They shot 2/24 from the field, and 1/15 from 3-point range. Faith had 16 players record minutes, while FLBC’s roster totals just 7. It was a clean game, with only 5 total personal fouls being recorded.
After a scoreless first minute, Faith went on a 17 minute 61-0 run to open scoring, before FLBC’s Weston Jenson’s 3 ball just barely rolled in to cut the lead to 58 with 3 minutes to the break. At halftime, FLBC spent about 5 minutes in the locker room before coming out and shooting around for about 10 minutes. Despite this warmup, they were unable to match their 3 first half points. After a 21 minute(!) 21-0 run by Faith over the break, Jenson found an open layup with a little over 2 minutes remaining, cutting the lead to 77.

I would recommend skipping around to listen to what the announcers start saying to fill dead air, at one point they start to speculate on whether 2 players with the same last name from the Faith men’s and women’s teams are siblings or married. Other topics include what branch of Baptists Faith is a part of, and I’m pretty sure they spent about 15 minutes talking about shoes.
On Saturday, the Conquerors took on Crown College JV (St. Bonifacius, MN), losing 85-11. I couldn’t take the time to watch that one, but it is also available in full here.
I would like to leave with something I found from FLBC’s season back in 2021, where their College president says that a 0-30 season (combined men’s and women’s) would be a success? In another blog post he says that the reason for existence of their sports program is “leadership training and discipleship”. So maybe, as long as losing 85-5 trains you to be a disciple of Christ, I can’t really criticize. Although it seems that many other bible colleges can still do a lot better than this.
I will be keeping an eye on FLBC over the coming season, and I will try to make it to a game in person!

Hello /WarhammerCompetitive the Abaddon Casino returns from a major event in San Diego, the CaliCup. For anyone who doesn’t remember my RTT event a few weeks ago, the list idea was “Pacting is basically gambling, CSM Vindicators doubly so. What if all-gambling was a list?” No thoughts, no gameplan, many weaknesses, all vibes. Speaking of, here’s the list:

And that’s it. Just about everything had a random number of shots or damage (or BOTH), meaning I get to roll more dice per step than my opponent and that means it’s a good thing, right? Right? Right. This time I remembered to take pictures inconsistently, instead of not-at-all, so behold …. scattered images of games progressing. As there were 8 games over the course of the event, and my memory is not great, I will be doing more TL;DR reports where I sort of gloss over things instead of getting in super tactical depth.
Before we start, huge shout out to the organizers of CaliCup 2024, they did a phenomenal job, it was seriously a great event. Anyone in the SoCal area who wants to attend a major event should give it a look. They’re also organizing another major next year, this time in Reno, called the Silver State Major. I will almost certainly be going almost entirely because of what a good experience this event was and how much fun I had.

Round 1: Tipping Point, Adapt or Die, Burden of Trust on GW Layout 1
Opponent: Chaos Demons w/ Shalaxi, Bloodthirster, Skarbrand, 2×6 bloodcrushers, 4×10 bloodletters

I love how straight forward this list is, it’s great, I love everything about it. It’s gonna be khorne and khorne you in your face. Also Shalaxi is there too. TL;DR: Demons player was able to apply strong early pressure while protecting shalaxi, but CSM was able to pick up bloodcrushers the turn after they appeared, removing a lot of the killing power as bloodletters die pretty quickly to Oblit + chaff fire. Eventually it was just Shalaxi vs about 1k points of CSM playing objective-keep-away. Final Score: 82-58 in favor of CSM
Round 2: Crucible of Battle, Stalwarts, Scorched Earth on GW Layout 1
Opponent: CSM Raiders with 2x AC/DC, 1x AC, 2×10 cultists, 2×3 nurglings, 3x bikes, 3x vindi, 1×10 warp talons

While I do not love AC/DC for personal reasons (I did not get into CSM to play possessed cultists), I understand and see their value. It’s a very good unit. It was an amazing unit. It is now merely very, very good. TL;DR: Wasting Oblit out-of-LoS is bad into AC/DC since it opens the board for warp talons to land wherever rather than be honest. Also, if you don’t have a way to dig AC/DC out of cover, they will hit you first and it will hurt and you will be tabled, and how did their Vindis hit harder than mine when he didn’t even have Abaddon? I lost for a lot of reasons but that’s what stuck. Result: AC/DC beats Abaddon 100-34
Round 3: Search and Destroy, Hidden Supplies, Purge the Foe
Opponent: GSC HoA w/ Biophagus, Clamavus, Kelermorph, Locus, 2x Primus, Reductus, 1×5 pistol Acos, 1×10 flamer Acos, 2×5 flamer Acos, 1×20 Neos, 2×10 neos, 1 Truck, 5 Aberrants, 2×5 Purestrains, 1×2 Laser Ridgerunners, 2×1 Mortar Ridgerunners

I do not GSC, I do not like it Sam-I-Am. You want to talk about gambling? How about not having an army rule if you can’t roll a dice properly? TL;DR: I wouldn’t mind Purge vs GSC in almost any other condition than going first and on hidden supplies. Hold more is basically impossible, it becomes easier for GSC to hold more, and kill more is harder as the first player since the 2nd player will know exactly how much to kill. I was never able to get kill more, well played to my opponent EXACTLY killing the same number of units R2-4 before eventually taking over the board over R4-5. Well played. Result: GSC win 84-72.

New BA is not something I’d played yet and I actually really like the list. Hard to prioritize the 2 Lancers when melee BA is jumping down your throat and those can pick up a vindi a turn on accident. I didn’t take many pictures of this one because I am scatterbrained, so I’ll talk more about it. Dante and his Sang Guard + the Baal Predator and some JPI + Intercessors hotly contested the right objective vs 2 bike + 1 vindi + 1 Oblit unit going back and forth until all those units died and no one got it. BA had a perfect staging ruin in the middle and therein we find the biggest issue with this list: Nothing can go dig that out and then BA is MUCH faster than Abaddon, so Abaddon gets to die whenever BA wants. And he did, turns out even without his unit the Smash Captain still overkills Abaddon by about 12 … or 20, somewhere in there, it was a lot. My opponent ended the game with just about Lemartes unit + Mephiston + 2 lancers left but that was enough to pull out a 86-74 BA victory.
Round 5: Tipping Point, Smoke and Mirrors, Scorched Earth
Opponent: WE with Angron, Kharn, Invo, Glaive MoE, 10 zerks, 5 zerks, 3 Eightbound, 3 EEB, 6 EEB, Forgefiend, Rhino, 10 Jackhals

Hey look it WE. Some unfortunate luck for my WE opponent this game. The way the drops ended up Invo and his units could be blocked by 1 unit of nurglings so … I did. He got the quad 6 T1 but couldn’t do anything with it because of the distance between us + the scout block, so T1 was mostly staging for both of us. T2 he didn’t get the Advance and Charge and that was a problem. He wouldn’t be able to get Angron in as I’d blocked off his landing zones, so he decided to clear the chaff with his zerks, and so he did, opening a Rhino, killing an Oblit and all my nurglings with all his zerks + 3 Eightbound. Those all immediately died but it opened things up for Angron and the EEB, the 3-man of which died in overwatch to a vindi. Angron and the 6 EEB pick up Aba + 2 oblits + a Vindi and we’re now playing keep-away, which we do nicely, killing everything that isn’t Angron and happily giving up a Secret Mission if it means Angron is over there away from the midboard. Good game, close game, but CSM prevail 88-76
Round 6: Search and Destroy, Prepared Positions, Take and Hold
Opponent: Hypercrypt Necrons with Nightbringer, Hexmark Destroyer, Lokhust Lord, Royal Warden, 5 Immortals, 2×5 Deathmarks, 1 Doomsday Ark, 1 Lokhust Destroyer, 3 Lokhust Heavy Destroyers, 2 Monolith.

Boy does my list have a second flaw and that’s up-down. Turns out I don’t have a lot of units with a large footprint and if those die you can kiss screening goodbye. There’s more pictures of this one so I’ll be more TL;DR. Vindis cannot for the life of them roll more than 5 shots on a monolith. I’m not able to kill one until T3 and the other lives the whole game barely scraping through Oblits, Aba, everything I had left. Up-down is able to go pretty much wherever once my cultists were demolished by the Heavy Destroyers and how do bikes take 3 combats to kill 5 deathmarks, please explain that to me Horus. Sometimes the casino comes up bust and while there’s probably more to it than that in this game, it sure didn’t help. CSM lose a close one 85-77.
Round 7: Crucible of Battle, Swift Action, Linchpin
Opponent: Guard with Solar, Tank Commander, Gaunt’s Ghosts, Tempestus Command, Platoon Command, 2x Catachan, 1x Infantry Squad, 2x Chimera, Leman Russ Battle Tank, Leman Russ Exterminator, Hellhound, 2×5 Ratlings, Rogal Dorn, 2x Tempestus Aquillon, 10 Scions.

Whoever thinks Aquillons are a normal and fine and well-costed unit is also coincidentally a guard player. How’re they cheaper than normal scions? Someone explain it to me like I’m a CSM player. My opponent was fun though and very understanding of the strength of the Aquillons. He still brought 20. Anyways, a few pics of this one so some TL;DR: Did everything I could T1 to move block, stage, and scrounge cover however I could so I could hit hard T2. It didn’t matter, a stray lascannon + hunter-killer took down an entire vindi. Hit on 3s, wound on 3s, 4+ save in cover, did 13 damage. I … well that’s warhammer baby. Not that it’d terribly matter, Aquillons on linchpin have a field day since they can so easily deny you your home objective, and deny me they did. I had trouble killing just about anything and after R3 the writing was on the wall, and I was tabled in 4. Guard ease on by 96-40.
Round 8: Tipping Point, Hidden Supplies, Take and Hold
Opponent: Ret Cadre w/ Up-down Enforcer, Grenades Coldstar, Ethereal, 2x Broadsides, Missile Fireknifes, 2x Flamer Starscythes, Fusion Sunforges, 1 Ghostkeel, 1 Krootox Rider, 10 Pathfinders, 2x Ion Riptides, 1 Sky Ray, 3x Stealth Suits, 1x Vespid squad
Deployment
We discussed what a weakness of my list was in the last game and this time I did nothing to address that and left a huge hole in my backline R3 for his melta team to drop in. Not a lot of pictures of this so we’ll talk about it a bit. T1 I was very conservative, very staging. A bike squad survived an entire Riptide and I lost all my nurglings. My Oblits waddled onto 2 points in the middle and I set up my vindis for overwatch near Aba. Only did 3 damage to the dropping missile team which then pasted a unit of bikes. Riptides again whiffed. I was able to remove some small chaff T3 and establish myself in the middle, then a bunch of crisis suits dropped behind me. Vindicator overwatch removed an entire flamer squad to protect my home objective temporarily until and un-screened 3″ deepstrike removed it because I was not paying close-enough attention. Said melta-coldstar team promptly removed said vindicator. Aba was removed by a Riptide sadly and the rest of the game was me scrambling to remove his stuff from my zone while the main Tau force slowly moved up and took over the center. I made a lot of mistakes this game but my opponent played it very well and we had a great time. Well played on the 84-75 victory Tau.
So, that’s it, the casino goes 2-6 at a major which is less than I’d hoped but that’s how it goes sometimes. I’m not one to hold a silly idea too long so it’s probably retired for now since it’s only now I realize LVO is like 2 months from now and I should get reps in with whatever I’m taking to that maybe. On the bright side a friend of mine won BiF GSC (because the podium GSC player wasn’t eligible to double-up prizes) so it wasn’t all for naught. For now, it’s back to the kitchen for me to cook up something new, and I’d be a big, fat liar if I said it wasn’t inspired by magnus_the_read. Like, what if 30 chosen all had a 4++ and defensive buffs out their respective butts? Wouldn’t that be something? I think it might be.
